Ronnie C. Chan is the Chairman of Hang Lung Group Limited and its subsidiary Hang Lung Properties Limited. Both are publicly listed companies in Hong Kong, dealing in real estate and property investment, development and management. Following successes in Shanghai, from 2005 to 2009, Hang Lung plans to invest US$5 billion and build about eighteen world-class commercial complexes in several major Chinese cities.
Chan also co-founded the privately held Morningside group which, in the past two decades, has owned and managed businesses in manufacturing, public transport operations, outdoor advertising, media, healthcare, online game operators, high-tech and biotech investments, developmental capital investments and other venture capital investments around the world.
Chan is actively involved with many non-profit, philanthropic endeavors, and educational organisations. He is Chairman of the Executive Committees of the One Country Two Systems Research Institute and of the Better Hong Kong Foundation, and an Advisor to the China Development Research Foundation of China's State Council. Internationally, he is a Vice Chairman of the Asia Society and Chairman of its Hong Kong Center, a Director of the Board of the Peter G. Peterson Institute for International Economics and a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, the National Committee on United States-China Relations, and the Committee of 100. A former member of the governing board of the World Economic Forum, Chan also serves on the governing and advisory bodies of a number of think tanks and universities.
In 1997, Chan established the China Heritage Fund as a non-profit organisation with a mission to preserve and restore important cultural relics throughout China. Chaired by Chan and led by Project Director Happy Harun, the Fund’s inaugural project focused on reconstructing the Garden of the Palace of Established Happiness, which was destroyed by fire in 1923. Completed in 2005, this was the first major privately funded project inside the Forbidden City Palace Museum. The fund is currently undertaking the ambitious reconstruction of the Hall of Rectitude Complex, set for completion in 2010. A graduate of Stanford University, Harun is a Senior Manager of Special Projects with the Chairman’s Office of Hang Lung Properties. She was also formerly a personal assistant to Chan.
